How It Works

How Clanview Works

Clanview compliments your genealogy research tool of choice.  It works with a “snapshot” (copy) of the family history data you have already gathered and quickly transforms it so it can be easily shared with others.

Clanview offers 3 broad benefits:

  • It solves the traditional problems of printing & sharing family trees (and repeating that process).
  • It presents family history in an interactive way that engages the viewer.
  • It encourages participation and feedback.

Clanview was built to work entirely in web browsers – like Safari, Chrome, Edge and Firefox – which are found on every PC, laptop and touch device.

Family History Researchers

This means that researchers of family history can quickly “publish” Clanviews from their browser using their secure online Clanview Account.

Each Clanview created is a 3D family tree with its own unique link that you can easily share with an unlimited number of trusted people (i.e. the Clanview Recipients).

This special link is impossible for others to guess.

Clanview Recipients

For each person that receives a unique Clanview link, they can open the 3D family tree instantly and explore it interactively in the web browser on their own touch device or computer.

The recipient has nothing to purchase, download or install because Clanview already works in the majority of browsers on the majority of computers and devices.

Step 1: Use your existing family history data

The Clanview publishing service works with existing family history data that you have already gathered in your chosen genealogy research application or online service.

Preparing to publish a Clanview 3D family tree (often shortened to just a “Clanview“) simply involves using the “Export” function (within your research app or service) to transfer this data into a single data file that is saved on your personal computer.

The majority of research apps and services support exporting data to an industry-standard file format called “GEDCOM” (GEnealogy Data COMmunication), which means they’re compatible with Clanview.

Don’t worry – our service provides step-by-step instructions on how to publish your Clanview, including steps to export your data to a GEDCOM file first.

Step 2: "Publish" Your Clanview

How Clanview works

After purchasing your Clanview service you will be given a secure online account that you use to publish your Clanviews.

The Clanview service does all the hard work for you.  Publishing a new Clanview is as simple as choosing your data file and giving your new Clanview a name.

You can tell Clanview to exclude data about living persons and indicate whom you wish to be the default starting point for your Clanview.

The rest is done for you and takes just a few minutes.

After publishing each Clanview you can review it – explore it yourself to ensure it is satisfactory before you share it with anyone.  If you’re not happy, simply delete it, adjust your research data and publish again.

Remember, we take the security and confidentiality of your data very seriously.  All data transferred is securely encrypted, published Clanviews always aim to exclude personal information about living persons, you always have the ability to check the information included in each Clanview before sharing it, we never use data for non-Clanview purposes and never disclose data to third parties.

Please see our Privacy Policy for your peace of mind.

Step 3: Explore, share and collaborate

how to share your family history using clanview

Each Clanview that you publish has its own special web page with a unique web address – easy to share but impossible to guess.

After creating a Clanview, this special link will be sent to you by email.  All previously published Clanviews are also listed in your account for you to open, explore, share and manage as you wish.

You can share each Clanview’s unique web address with your chosen recipients using your trusted method of choice.

How you share is up to you!  Examples of private sharing include email, private social media group, instant message or family group message.

Some researchers may even publish a Clanview that’s suitable for use in a blog or on a website BUT it’s important to remember that Clanview is designed so that you don’t need to build your own website.

We handle everything for you so your published Clanview becomes your own secret website for you to share privately with whomever you wish.

Any of your trusted recipients who receive the secret link will be able to simply click or tap it to instantly open and explore your Clanview any time, anywhere and on any device.*

* Clanview aims to support the major web browsers that run on the majority of computers and devices.  Internet connectivity required.  See Terms of Use for details.
